Job Description

Overview This full-time Social Sciences Research Assistant position will be shared equally between two faculty members in the Department of Psychological Sciences Communication Sciences Program. Working under general supervision, the Social Sciences Research Assistant 2 will plan and carry out research activities for assigned projects supporting research studies in two labs focused on 1) communication development in children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and 2) swallowing physiology and rehabilitation in children and adults. Responsibilities include creating and managing databases, running audiovisual and electrophysiologic data collections, recruiting and maintaining participant engagement. This is a one-year term position. Responsibilities Plan and carry out research activities for assigned projects. Create and manage laboratory databases for data collection, cleaning, preparation and analysis, automated survey distribution, reminders, and participant tracking. (20%) Recruit participants, schedule lab visits, maintain regular contact, and coordinate data collection appointments. Build rapport with participants and caregivers through regular contact (e.g., calls, texts, reminders), maintain positive relationships to support ongoing participation. (35%) Operate lab-based and home-based audiovisual recording and electrophysiologic equipment during research sessions; ensure all equipment is functioning properly. (15%) Manage lab emails, update the lab websites, and organize documents and outreach materials. (10%) Nonessential Functions Organize and schedule lab meetings as needed. Maintain a clean and organized physical lab environment. (5%) Support project work of principal investigator through daily activities, assist with literature reviews, poster preparation, and other research dissemination tasks as needed. (5%) May train new staff and/or direct the work of students. Assist with recruiting, interviewing, and training undergraduate and graduate research assistants. (5%) Perform other duties as assigned. (5%) Contact Department: Daily contact with supervisors to discuss research, lab activities, and maintain workflow. Moderate contact with department staff for student hiring, ordering, student building access, etc. University: Limited or no contact with other departments to share information. Occasional contact with the Institutional Review Board staff and other support areas on campus (e.g., ThinkBox, RedCAP, HoloUniversity, etc.). External: Moderate contact with community to recruit research subjects. Moderate contact with external collaborators. Occasional contact with vendors for ordering and troubleshooting equipment challenges. Students: Continuous contact with undergraduate and graduate student research assistants to exchange information. Supervisory Responsibility This position has no direct supervision of staff employees. This position does include supervision of undergraduate and graduate student research assistants. May train new staff and/or direct the work of students. Qualifications Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in Communication Sciences from an appropriate accredited institution and 1 to 3 years of experience required. Prior experience with participant recruitment for research studies, data entry, and data management preferred. Coursework completed in the communication and swallowing sciences preferred. Required Skills: Strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to interact with children and adults effectively and successfully. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and research participants face to face. Mature judgement, reliability, and responsibility. Moderate computer skills including Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Canva, and Google software. Ability to learn new software (e.g., RedCap, VALT, LabChart, HoloAnatomy), equipment (e.g., Powerlab, Iowa Oral Performance Instrument) and computer skills. Ability to collaborate with a range of individuals. Strong ability to multitask. Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest. Ability to meet consistent attendance. Working Conditions This position may require occasional work in the evenings and on weekends within the regular work week. #J-18808-Ljbffr
